Kamala Harris & Form Over Substance
My daughter will tell you that the one thing you do not want to do is lie to me. I am a stickler for truth. I hold myself to the same stringent standard I hold everyone else to because I believe the adage that “the truth shall set you free.” Besides, it’s just easier to tell the truth. Lying takes a lot of effort to keep track of the lies. The truth keeps track of itself. As a lawyer, my passion for truth combined with my training for facts causes me to look at life through a mostly objective lens, with the proviso that no one can be fully relieved of 100% of their inherent subjectivity.
Kamala Harris is an interesting and charismatic figure. Her performance during the second Democratic debate undoubtedly elevated her status among the field of candidates. In fact, I suspect it will be a Biden/Harris ticket (or a Harris/fill-in-the-name ticket if Biden cannot go the distance).
I was not surprised by her performance.
I recall watching Harris during the early Senate Judiciary hearings into the alleged Russian collusion matter and thinking “she is a danger and the Republicans should keep an eye on her.” The danger, as I perceived it then, was in her “prosecutorial delivery” which combined her intellect, passion, timing and instinct for the kill. What I observed during her questioning of witnesses was a carefully constructed verbal trap delivered with impeccable timing. She has great form.
But when it comes to leadership, substance must outweigh form.
Harris had a few excellent moments during last night’s debate. The one that caught my attention was her statement, “America doesn’t want to see a food fight. They want to know how we are going to put food on their table.” [emphasis added]. There it was again. The carefully constructed verbal set-up delivered with impeccable timing. The problem, however, is the content. If you look carefully at what she said, it’s classic Socialism. The state, the government, will put food on your table. Your sustenance will not be provided by the sweat of your own labor. It will be gifted to you by the state because the state’s job is to take care of your needs.
What happens when you rely upon the state for your well-being? This is where we get back to my distaste for lies and the undeniability of facts.
Barack Obama said he had a plan where the state would take care of your medical needs. He said you would save up to $2500. He said the care would be as good or better than what you had privately. He said if you liked your plan and you doctor you could keep you doctor. So, we “bought” what he was selling. The fact is there was no savings, you could not keep your plan, you could not keep your doctor, there was no savings, and, in fact, the cost went up. Significantly.
I have written other posts about the dangers of state-provided free stuff. In fact, I’ve written about the dangers of free stuff regardless of who provides it. This isn’t about that. This is about being hoodwinked again by a slick delivery, honed to perfection, designed to play to your emotions while disregarding the facts and known history. Socialism, the state taking care of your needs, does not work.
Donald Trump is entertaining. So is Kamala Harris but in a different way. Charisma is always attention grabbing. But be aware that form over substance is a trap. What matters is not what you are promised but what you know from experience for yourself.
I can say with certainty that if you’ve lived long enough and are educated enough to read this post that you, too, know that you are being lied to when any politician says they will provide for you what you inherently know you are to meant to provide for yourself.
When I practiced divorce law, I taught seminars in how to find the right lawyer for your case. I always started off by telling people, “If you interview a lawyer who says, “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of you” then get out of that office as quickly as possible. When looking for a divorce lawyer, you don’t need or want a parent. You want a partner. Think how much more damage can result if you’re looking for a parent when choosing a leader.
So, when Kamala Harris, or any other candidate, says or implies that the state will provide you with what you need, it’s a sure sign that what you need to do is look for a different candidate.
